How the LAB to Pantone Match Is Calculated
This tool finds the closest Pantone match by measuring color difference in CIE Lab space using Delta E (ΔE), not by comparing RGB or hex values directly. Lab space is designed to reflect how the human eye perceives color, so a ΔE-based match is more accurate to real-world appearance than a simple numeric comparison.
Each of the 1,341 Pantone Solid Coated colors in this tool’s reference library is stored with its own Lab coordinates. When you enter an L*, a*, b* value, the tool calculates the ΔE distance between your input and every Pantone entry, then ranks the results from closest to furthest. The top match is the Pantone color with the smallest total color difference from your input.
ΔE values below 2 are generally considered visually indistinguishable to most people; values above 5 indicate a difference most people would notice at a glance. The tool labels each match’s ΔE score accordingly, so you can judge match quality at a glance instead of guessing from the number alone.
